In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History launched the first Negro History Week. This event later evolved into Black History Month, first recognized nationally by President Gerald Ford as part of the country's bicentennial celebration. Today, Woodson is known as the "Father of Black History" and the "Father of Black History Month."

Hamilton Hatter Scholarship Luncheon – Celebrate one of the founders and first President of Bluefield State College (1895 – 1906) at this community lunch in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center.
When BSC was founded in 1895 with land-grant funds, then Governor Virgil A. Lewis chose Hamilton Hatter as the first principal of the school.

Students, Alumni, Faculty & Staff can contact the Office of Student Life in the Harris-Jefferson Student Center or RSVP to reserve a seat for the lunch.
